Wrinkles which occur or worsen with facial expressions (dynamic wrinkles) can be decreased by decreasing the muscle activity of the small muscles underneath the wrinkled skin.

Botox© is the brand name for Botulinum toxin type A which comes from the bacteria, Clostridium botulinum, the same bacteria that causes botulism. However, the concentrations of Botox© are very low, causing a temporary decrease in muscle activity only where it is injected. This decrease in muscle activity leads to a decrease in dynamic wrinkles.

Wrinkles which occur when the face is at rest (no facial expressions) are called static wrinkles and require a different approach. Dermal fillers such as Restylane® are naturally occurring compounds which are injected into the soft tissue below the wrinkle, leading to a decrease in the size of the wrinkle crease.

Chemical Peels/Microdermabrasion

Chemical peels and microdermabrasion are used to remove damaged layers of the skin. Chemical peels use a chemical which is placed on the skin to induce epidermal peeling. Microdermabrasion uses a mechanical device to safely scrape away the damaged skin layers. New healthier skin grows after the damaged skin is removed.

A physician-grade Chemical Peel is a medical procedure and adverse effects can occur despite the utmost care. The risks associated with Chemical Peels include but are not limited to redness, swelling, pain, bleeding, bruising, allergic reaction, increased sensitivity to hot or cold for several weeks, infection, hyperpigmentation, hypopigmentation, permanent scarring and failure to completely reduce wrinkles.
