Lasers are used for cosmetic purposes in several ways. The energy of a laser is used to heat up a specific damaged region of the skin to the point that the damaged region becomes smaller. Normal skin is not targeted. Different regions of the skin respond to laser light at different wavelengths, so by choosing a specific laser wavelength, the damaged skin region is preferentially targeted.
For example, pigmented lesions on the face and unwanted hair follicles have an abundance of melanin. By using a laser wavelength which targets melanin, the pigmented lesions and hair follicles can be targeted. For visible blood vessels on the face, a laser wavelength which targets hemoglobin would be used.
Skin can be rejuvenated by using laser wavelengths which target the underlying dermis, leading to healthier skin as the dermis reforms. Intense Pulse Light (IPL) differs somewhat from a laser in that IPL sends a broad spectrum of light energy to the skin allowing lesions which are targeted by different wavelengths to be treated simultaneously. With photodynamic therapy, a sensitizing compound which is preferentially absorbed by oil glands and acne bacteria is placed on the skin before using IPL. This combination works better than IPL alone for severe acne.
